Energy Psychology

So what is Energy Psychology? There are various forms or methods of Energy Psychology.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) are only two such therapies and are the ones that I use most often in my practices. There are many other forms.
Rainbow Forest Qigong, that I learnt in Minnesota, USA is another such method, as indeed are many other methods within Hypnosis itself.
I would even add TIR (Traumatic Incident Reduction – Metapsychology) into this category. TIR is a therapy that I would leave till the last resort before using it, as it is a viewing process that I would prefer the client not needing to do, however it has worked where other methods haven’t. And that in itself makes it a useful method to know.
EFT – Gary Craig
Its the discovery that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s “subtle energies.”
The entire body of Chinese Medicine is centered around these minute energy flows but, until recently, their use for emotional issues has gone unnoticed. “Conventional psychotherapy takes a long time to do very little,” says Garry Craig founder of EFT, “and that’s because psychologists have been looking in the wrong place for centuries.”
According to Craig’s findings, traumatic memories from the past cause a ‘short circuit’ in the free flow of the body’s Chi (energy) and that is what causes current forms of anxiety, nervousness, depression, headaches, phobic responses and the like. “Once you realize this,” maintains Craig, “psychotherapy becomes easy.”
EFT repairs this short circuit by stimulating precise meridian points via tapping on them with the fingertips. This simple process can be learned and applied by anyone. EMDR – Helen Shapiro
A target is identified and processed using EMDR procedures. These involve the client identifying the most vivid visual image related to the memory (if available), a negative belief about self, related emotions and body sensations.
Then the client is instructed to follow an object that moves before the eyes. There is an 8-phase protocol in using the taught EMDR.
However I have found it unnecessary to use the 8-phase procedure in hypnosis. By using a SUD’s rating (Subjective Units of Distress, 0-10), instructing the client to focus on the negative feelings whilst in hypnosis and then to open the eyes when that feeling is found and follow a light from left to right. Then the first time I ask the client to close their eyes after about 20-30 seconds, squeeze their shoulder and instruct the sub-conscious to “Disconnect Now.” Then I instruct the client to again look for the emotion and follow the same procedure. On subsequent times, I ask the client to decide the procedure for themselves, i.e. When to close and open the eyes. Each time the feeling goes further away, close the eyes and bring it back. When the emotion is down to a 2 or 0, I ask the sub-conscious mind if it is acceptable to file the incident away.
In all energy work the client will notice that they are able to talk about the negative incident without feeling any negative emotions when they talk about the incident.
